RAYN Technologies Introducing Laser Texturing of Painted or Printed Surfaces

Even coated (painted) surfaces are seeing an explosion of new techniques to apply textures. Tacia (Cubic) introduced a hydrographic (water dip process) coating capable of texture. Akzo Nobel has developed a printing and painting process capable of making intricate textures. Rayn Technologies has developed a process that allows laser texturing of painted or printed surfaces.

Spectrum Industries Leases Half of Industrial Building

A local metal and plastic finishing company is expanding its operation. Grand Rapids-based Spectrum Industries has leased half of a 95,035-square-foot building in Kentwood, at 5265 Kellogg Woods Dr. SE, according to Colliers West Michigan today. Spectrum Industries was looking for a location for more manufacturing and warehouse space, according to President Kevin Bassett.

The company applies functional and decorative finishes to metal and plastic components, including its electrodeposition division, which applies protective coating to more than one million parts a day. Spectrum Industries utilizes six robots to perform decorative finishes and specializes in hydrographics and high-end finishes, such as piano black, clear coat, metallic and other paints.

Automakers’ focus on performance, luxury vehicles yields growth for suppliers

For suppliers such as Grand Rapids-based Spectrum Industries Inc., the industry changes are creating opportunities for more business. The manufacturer of decorative finishes that simulate wood grain, carbon fiber and high-gloss applications often found in option packages has capitalized on the influx of sporty and luxury models in the market, said President Kevin Bassett.

“We’re seeing a trend where automakers are offering a high-end package on more of the volume (vehicles),” Bassett said. “Historically, they may have offered a high-end package on 10 percent of their volume, and now it’s on 50 percent.”

A group of area companies, big and small, is sharing more than $1.5 million to “upskill” their workforces and new hires. The Skilled Trades Training Fund grants from the state, announced last month, allow employers to develop and implement training programs to enhance their businesses. The grant funds that will be used to upgrade the skills of existing employees require a commitment by the company to hire additional employees to fill current or future positions.
